We’ve Been Inspected 39 Times in 12 Months

As some of you have seen, ABC ran an “investigation” into the sanitation practices of food trucks in Chicago, and the city’s ability to inspect and control them.  Without any prior knowledge of sanitation practices on food trucks, or how often we are actually inspected, ABC has cast a cloud over our industry that is completely unfounded.  Our relationship with our customers is always our number one priority, so we feel it is our responsibility to make public two very important facts about the sanitation practices at the Happy Lobster Truck:

  1. Over the past 12 months, the Happy Lobster Truck has been inspected Thirty-Nine (39) times, including 16 times in 4 days at the Taste of Chicago. We have been inspected in counties all over Illinois and in multiple states.
  2. We have never failed an inspection in almost two years of being in business.
  3. We use gloves and tongs to handle all of our food. With that said, it should be noted that industry standard only requires gloves when handling ready-to-eat foods. In other words, food that will not receive any further cooking (thus killing any existing microorganisms), should always be handled with gloves. Clean, bare hands are used by chefs in kitchens all over the world.

Food trucks are inspected for every event outside of the city of Chicago that they attend, a detail that this news report simply skimmed over.  The report focused on “canvass”, otherwise known as “surprise”, inspections.  While inspections in other cities are expected and known, when you are inspected, on average, 2-3 times a month, it is pretty hard to fake compliance.

In an effort to be completely transparent with our customers, below you will find six such inspection reports from the past 12 months.  We are also happy to provide dates and counties of every inspection we have passed to anyone who would like the information.  At the Happy Lobster, our customers can be confident that the food they eat is not only delicious, but always safe to eat.
